Sergio Garcia has steered his career back on track by enjoying life away from the golf course and hopes his seventh-place finish in last week’s U.S. Open is the start of better things to come.
The Spanish former world number two has slipped down the rankings since his much-publicised relationship with Greg Norman’s daughter Morgan ended in March 2009, but his promising performance with playing Mizuno JPX E600 Driver at Congressional could mark a turning point.
The 31-year-old’s emergence from the wilderness has not been a result of going back to basics, making great changes to his swing or seeing a psychologist.
"It’s all been quite simple," Garcia told Reuters on Wednesday on the eve of the BMW International Open.
"It’s all to do with really enjoying my life outside the game of golf, doing things I love to do, like playing football and tennis and just spending good quality time with the family. (Mizuno JPX E600 Driver)
"That helps me when I get back on tour. I’m happy on the course."
Garcia has admitted to being heartbroken by his relationship split and his golf suffered as he went from challenging Tiger Woods for the world number one spot to being 85th in March this year, his lowest ranking since turning professional in 1999.
He currently lies 64th in the world, helped by his finish by Mizuno JPX E600 Driverat the U.S. Open, and believes a change in attitude has led to an improvement his game.
"When you get to the course and you want to be out there, you want to try hard, work hard and try to get better. It’s obviously a lot easier than just going through the motions," he said.
"You can see the improvement in my attitude in the way I have been playing Mizuno JPX E600 Driver recently. I’ve had some really good rounds and I’ve had a lot of tournaments when I’ve been up there.
"But it’s been inconsistent so there is still a lot to do. I need to put four rounds together, kind of like I did last week."
Garcia finished tied for seventh at Congressional, 11 strokes behind run-away winner Rory McIlroy of Britain.
"I played Mizuno JPX E600 Driver very well on the first day then OK for the next three days. It was a very positive week," the Spaniard said.
"My long game is a little bit more where it used to be and the short game has improved quite a bit. I’m chipping much better for instance. I’m putting much better.
