Erik Compton, a two-time heart transplant recipient, fired a seven-under 65 Sunday to win the Mexico Open by two strokes.
Compton, who claimed his first Nationwide Tour title, ended the event at 17- under-par 271. He had won three times by Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter on the Canadian Tour, but this was his first win anywhere since getting his second heart transplant in 2008.
It was a tough week all around for the tournament. There were weather delays each of the four days of the event. The earlier delays at El Bosque Golf Club caused the third and final rounds to both be completed on Sunday.
Compton, who battles fatigue problems, played the final 25 holes of the tournament by Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter on Sunday.
"This tournament has kind of summed up my life," Compton admitted. "There was a lot of adversity to overcome in this tournament, just like what I've dealt with personally. To win this is everything to me. I never thought I'd play golf by Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter again, at least not at this level, and I proved to myself I'm more than just a guy with two heart transplants."
Richard H. Lee, who shared the third-round lead, closed with a three-under 69 to take second place at minus-15. Will Wilcox posted a four-under 68 to grab third place at 14-under-par 274.
Compton trailed Lee and Matthew Giles by two at the start of the final round and remained two behind Lee despite birdies on the second and fifth.
Lee birdied the first, and then bogeyed the second. He followed with birdies four and five to remain two clear of Compton.
That margin was gone after Compton birdied the seventh and Lee bogeyed the same hole. Both players birdied the eighth to remain tied at 14-under.
Compton fell two back as he bogeyed the ninth, while Lee birdied the same hole. Compton birdied the 10th, and two groups later, Lee did the same.
Lee's lead was trimmed to one when he bogeyed the par-four 11th. Compton then birdied Nos. 12 and 13 to grab the lead by him. Lee dropped another stroke on the 14th.
Armed with a two-shot lead by Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter, Compton parred 14 and 15 before sinking his final birdie on No. 16. That gave him a three-stroke lead and he parred the final two holes to claim the win.
"This win has put me over the top. This is exactly what I needed," Compton said. "To think of what I went through and to have all the support and love of everyone around me, it's almost unreal."
Lee nearly erased the deficit with back-to-back birdies from the 16th. Needing to birdie the par-five 18th to force a playoff, Lee instead stumbled to a bogey to end two back. (Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter)
Giles closed with a one-under 71 to share fourth place at 13-under-par 275 with Kyle Thompson (70), James Nitties (68), Roberto Castro (65) and Chris Baker (68).
