James Morrison carded his second straight five-under 66 on Friday to grab a one-shot lead by TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver midway through the Open de France.
Morrison had five birdies in a flawless round at Le Golf National to finish 36 holes at 10-under 132 by TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver. It's the second time he's led at this stage of a tournament, and the only other time resulted in his lone European Tour win at the 2010 Madeira Islands Open.
"I think I probably had the one squirrely shot in two days, been pretty steady, pretty solid," Morrison said. "Haven't holed everything, but I have played TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver very well, but I've holed a few keys putts and it's been a good two days."
First-round co-leader Richard Green reached 11-under through 13 holes to grab the lead on Friday, but double-bogeyed the seventh to finish at nine-under 133, which is good for second. He shot a three-under 68 on the afternoon.
The field drops off from there, with Mark Foster in third at six-under after his second straight round of 68.
Graeme Storm, who shared the lead with Green after one round, stumbled to a four-over 75 and fell to 14th at two-under overall. He began his round with two birdies, but had three bogeys and a killer quadruple-bogey at the 18th -- his ninth hole -- to tumble down the leaderboard.
Morrison started slowly from the 10th tee, but didn't give away any shots. After parring the opening nine holes, he caught fire.
He moved to seven-under with back-to-back birdies from the second, and then took the outright lead with three straight birdies from the sixth.
After the slow start, Morrison wanted to finish well by TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver, but he exceeded his own expectations.
Green had a good opportunity to take the lead after three straight birdies from the second had him at 11-under. The disaster at the seventh, however, left him one stroke back heading into the weekend.
"I guess my composure really has been very good, and I've been able to score well enough to keep momentum going along," Green said. "You know, my putting has been very good, and you know, I've driven the ball very well by TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver apart from obviously the seventh hole today."
Paul Broadhurst (70) and Thongchai Jaidee (70) share seventh at four-under, while Michael Campbell (67), Nicolas Colaserts (70), Anders Hansen (69), Jose Manuel Lara (67) and Lorenzo Gagli (67) are tied for ninth at minus-three.
Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 79 on Friday and missed the cut at eight-over...Bubba Watson, playing in his first European Tour event, also missed the cut at six-over...The cut fell at two-over 144, with 67 players advancing to the weekend...Only eight eagles were recorded on Friday, all at par-fives.
